Before leaving BOH that day, Isabel placed a call to Citizens Bank of Towns County and arranged for an immediate visit to learn more about Ray's mysterious property deed. Although the mortgage had been paid off for several years, the bank personnel seemed familiar with Ray's account and offered to answer any questions that were within their power to answer. Isabel had many questions, and she figured that Citizens' Bank would probably be the place to start.

Oddly enough, there was no reference to the Stoddard Farm in Ray's will, but his will was without any codicils and all of his estate, in it's entirety, was directed to Isabel. Questions relative to ownership would prove moot.

If Ray had ever taken a tax deduction for these mortgage payments, evidence of his ownership of the Farm would have been discovered during an examination of his old tax returns after his death. This was clearly a part of Ray's life that was never revealed to Isabel; and, obviously, Ray had dealt with these finances without burdening her with the details.

One of the wonderful things about small towns is that everyone knows their banker, and the bankers, in turn, really get to know their customers. Ed Hightower (no relation to Louella) greeted Isabel and Micah in the lobby of the bank, and led them back into a small but comfortable seating area. |next|
